The European Lawyers Foundation ran a project for the Southern African Development Community (SADCLA) region, financed by the International Bar Association (IBA). Its main goal, in collaboration with the Law Society of South Africa (LSSA) and the SADC Lawyers Association (SADCLA) was to train SADC lawyers in relation to the impact of the globalisation of legal services and how local lawyers can ensure that they obtain a bigger share of the work related to cross-border international transactions.
The main output of this project was the organisation of a conference in Johannesburg, which took place on 9 October 2023. The conference was attended by around 130 lawyers, most of them from South Africa. Ms. Eunice Masipa, President of the LSSA, made the welcome speech and she was followed by Judge A. Ledwaba, Deputy Judge President of the Gauteng region, who was the keynote speaker. This was followed by the six sessions, and each included two speakers: an IBA speaker and a local speaker. Whereas the IBA speakers focused on the international framework, the local speakers explained how the international framework applied to local conditions in SADC and South Africa.
